Here is an unusual find, this is from 1870, just after the end of the Civil War. It is a wool cape with scalloped edges and embroidery, a drawstring hood, and some very odd stains of unknown origin, I have photographed them, you be the judge (at first glance it looks like blood). Anyway, it is an interesting collector garment nonetheless, in wonderful shape for the age, there are a few separations in the fabric that have caused the beginnings of holes, but nothing major. It seems to be something that was warm, layered in fact, probably owned by an 8 or 9 year old child from a middle class family. I am told that it was found with a blanket, but I unfortunately do not have that. When spread out flat the cape is 54 x 34 including the hood, just an amazing item that I doubt I will ever be lucky enough to come across again!
